In homeopathy, the concept of “antidoting” is used to describe the process of counteracting or neutralizing the effects of a remedy. This can be useful if someone feels that they’ve experienced unwanted effects from a homeopathic remedy.
Disclaimer: If you are experiencing life-threatening symptoms, please contact emergency services or your doctor. This information is to be used for educational purposes only. I am not a physician, and cannot make healthcare decisions for you.
If you are under the care of a homeopath, PLEASE consult with them FIRST before trying any of the suggestions before. With some methods of homeopathy, like in homeopathic detox or clearing, it is key to communicate with your homeopath as symptoms are often the body’s way to show the next remedy.
If you are self-prescribing homeopathic remedies or can’t get a hold of your homeopath, here are some suggestions that I have found helpful. I would start with the first suggestion and work your way through them as needed.
6 Tips from a Homeopath
1. Wait It Out
If the symptoms caused by a remedy are mild or temporary, sometimes simply waiting for the effects to wear off is the best solution. Homeopathic remedies are often very diluted, so their effects tend to be short-lived and will naturally dissipate over time. You may have heard of the term: homeopathic aggravation. This describes a temporary worsening of existing symptoms; it simply the body working hard like a healing crisis or a herx reaction that often happens during detoxing.
2. Consult a professional
Reach out to your homeopath. They are the best person to help you.
Because antidoting can be complex, it’s always best to consult with a trained homeopath before trying to antidote a remedy on your own. Another remedy might be better instead of antidoting and if not they can guide you in selecting the right antidote (if necessary) and ensure that you don’t unintentionally cause more imbalance.
If your homeopath isn’t available, there is an excellent service provided by Homeopathy 247 where professional homeopaths are on duty 24/7 and you can obtain direction and specific advice. (This is a paid service.)
3. Stop taking the remedy
If someone has taken too many doses of a remedy especially when self-prescribing, I have found the need to stop taking the remedy and give the body time to “reset.” This way the body can rebalance itself.
3. Drink Water & Rest
Drinking a lot of water, rest, or engaging in light exercise I have found can help alleviate the effects of a homeopathic remedy, particularly if the symptoms are mild.
5. Create an Aggravation Zapper
This is an effective method that I learned from a homeopath many years ago.
Basically, to “zap” a homeopathic remedy, I put a pellet of the potency/remedy that aggravated (if it is a liquid remedy, use a drop of it) into a medium sized cup.
Fill up the cup and then dump and immediately refill the cup, continuing this dumping and refilling until the desired glass is reached. I usually do this around the 6th cup, Or the 10th or 12th cup. Just pick a cup as any one of those will help stop the aggravation. Then, take a sip.
Note: the pellet will be dumped out of the glass too – you don’t have to wait for it to dissolve – the remedy is already in the water as soon as the pellet hits!

6. LAST RESORT: Neutralize the Action of the remedy
If you are under the care of a homeopath, please do consult with them before doing this step, especially if you are on a homeopathic detox protocol. I would try Step 5 before resorting to this.
Certain substances have the potential to antidote or neutralize the effects of homeopathic remedies. These include:
- Coffee: can help antidote remedies, especially when someone is overly sensitive or if the remedy causes excessive restlessness or excitement. It’s often used if a remedy has produced symptoms like insomnia or anxiety. If you are like me and don’t normally drink coffee, drinking some strong black coffee will do it.
- Mint: Peppermint (especially in strong forms like peppermint oil) can antidote remedies, especially if someone experiences digestive disturbances after taking a remedy.
- Vicks or Deep Blue Rub: Sadly, I have antidoted remedies unintentionally before using these, as eucalyptus and menthol are strong and often cancel out the effects of a remedy.
- Camphor: Often used as an antidote to many remedies, particularly when there is an overstimulation or aggravation of symptoms. Camphor is thought to have a “cooling” or calming effect on the body.
Conclusion
I hope this was helpful.
To be honest, I have been using homeopathy since I was a little girl. Only two times have I ever had the need to do tip #6.
In all the years that I have personally taken homeopathy for my own health issues, waiting it out and getting some extra rest helped my body and the unwanted symptoms went away.
Homeopathy is an amazing medicine. I’m so glad you are using it. It has helped me and my family so much over the years overcome all types of health problems.
