Exploring the Methods of Homeopathy- Part 1: Classical Method

Homeopathy is a wonderful natural medicine. It does work wonderfully on the human body.

The issue now is: finding a homeopath that uses a method of homeopathy that works for you. Each person is different and different methods or combinations of methods are needed. Homeopathy is a SYSTEM of medicine, that can be used in a variety of methods.

Here are a few methods that I have come across:

I’m not going to go into all the different methods now but will write other posts later as it as a large subject.

An experience with Classical Homeopathy

This method was my first experience with homeopathy. I was around 13 years old, suffering from severe headaches and brain fog. I remember going into the sweet homeopath’s office in her basement. Her walls were covered with books and sitting at a table that had a huge dictionary type book on it. I would talk and she would scribble down notes. Sometimes she would pause me and turn the pages of that huge reference books (She called it a repertory), looking for an entry before she would let me continue.

It was such a peaceful space. I felt safe to share some of my deepest fears and struggles and the homeopath, Grandma Woehl (as I affectionately called her), would listen without judging me.

She would let me talk for 30 minutes to a hour, intermittently asking me questions. Then she would sit back in her office chair and smile and let me know that she would study my case and come up with a remedy to help my brain fog and headaches.

I would leave her office and a week or two later receive in the mail an envelope with instructions and a zip lock bag filled with tiny sugar pellets to take. They tasted good, and usually within the week I would start to see a difference. Usually, my headaches and brain fog would get worse for a few days and then my brain would be clear with no headaches! It was miraculous in my eyes.

Grandma Woehl would only give me one remedy at a time, usually only one dose of a remedy. If it brought up new symptoms or didn’t do anything, she would have me wait a month or till our next appointment before she would give me another remedy. We had follow up meetings every 2-3 months. It was hard to have to wait so long between remedies, but I was willing as homeopathy was the only thing that took away the pain of those headaches.

Summary of Classical method

Classical method of homeopathy is to find ONE remedy that matches all aspects of your whole presenting symptoms & personality. The goal is to find the presenting remedy and then your constitutional remedy.

Then once the remedy is chosen, you get one dry dose (or a daily LM dose) to take. Then you wait till your next appointment usually about 2-3 months later.

During the waiting period, you need to be very careful not to antidote your remedy with coffee, eucalyptus, tea tree oil or menthol.

Personal story: Grandma Woehl had found a remedy that took away 60% of my brain fog and headaches. I was so thrilled!!! She gave me the remedy before leaving for 6 months. About 3 months into that time, I was out with friends and decided to get a Frappuccino. Bad mistake. I rarely drink coffee and that was enough to bring back the headaches and brain fog full force. I was so miserable until 2 months later I got another dose of the remedy and then the headaches abated a bit. Looking back now, I see that it wasn’t just the coffee, but the combination of coffee, with milk and sugar (at the time I was allergic to both) that overwhelmed my body, throwing it back into the old rut of headaches and brain fog.

Conclusion

There is great value in finding your constitutional remedy as when you aren’t sure what remedy to take for a symptom, taking a dose of your constitutional will provide a level of relief.

The Classical method is slow, requires a lot of time for both the homeopath & the client. The homeopath often spends hours researching, studying, searching for the right remedy. The client must have the patience to wait and see if the remedy will work. If it is the right remedy, the effects will be lasting.

In another blog post, we will continue to explore the other methods of homeopathy.
