Homeopathy seems so simple, then you go to Sprouts grocery store to pick up some Arnica; surely there is only one kind? And you are faced with choices. Arnica 6C, 12C, 200c. Pellets vs cream. What should I choose?
And that’s a good question.
Let’s talk about potency.
Homeopathic remedies come in lots of potencies. There are several main categories of potencies: X, C, M, LM, CM & MM.
And in those categories, there are multiple potencies available to choose from.
My goal in writing this post is to help you gain an understanding of why a potency is chosen and empower you to branch out and try different potencies for yourself and your family.
Let’s dive in.

X potencies – 1x, 3x, 6x, 12x
These are considered low potencies. Remedies in this potency can be repeated frequently, treats mainly physical issues, and are commonly found in over-the count combination remedies like Cold Calm.
Cell Salts or Tissue salts are also in this potency and are excellent for use in pregnancy.
C potencies – 6c, 12c, 30c, 200c
These are the most commonly use potencies in homeopathy, especially here in America.
6c & 12 C – treats mostly physical complaints with some emotions
Note: In potencies above 12C , there is none of the original substance left.
30C – treats all areas but is gentle; a good potency to start off with when unsure
200C – treats deeper on the mental/emotional plane. Good for intense acute symptoms.
M potencies – 1M, 10M, 50M
Useful in intense acute situations.
M potencies are best used under direction of a professional homeopath, as these remedies often bring out deeper and stronger responses to a remedy.
CM & MM –often referred to as Mega Potencies
These are potencies that touch the emotions on a deep level. This potency is amazing for stuck cases or cases that are emotionally driven, as a lot of relief and breakthrough happens. Again, these potencies are best used under the direction of a professional homeopath, as these remedies often bring out deeper and stronger responses to a remedy
LM potencies – LM1 all the way to LM 1M
Dr. Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, lived in harsh days. He wanted to offer something gentle, something that works, thus homeopathy was born. Near the end of his career, he discovered LMs.
These potencies work deeply on an emotional and physical level. Lower potencies can work aggravations on a deeper level or the symptom continues to go on and on.
Most common way to use LM, is to get a liquid dose of LM 1, take it daily for a set amount of days before moving onto LM2 and repeating.
At Radiant Homeopathy, we use LM differently than most homeopaths. I, Elisa, am a sensitive individual and tend to react to most medication. LM is liquid form and low LM like LM1 and LM3 do not agree with me. As our practice grows, my mom and I are finding that the more complex and sensitive a person is, higher LM in dry doses work better.
Final thoughts:
Please keep in mind that every person is different and will need different potencies.
We are all so different. This is the beauty of homeopathy; its not a one size fits all.
This is more of an advanced beginners post on homeopathy. If you are new to homeopathy, I would recommend sticking with X & C potencies when self-prescribing.
Muscle Response Testing is also an excellent way to help determine potency and dose. You can learn more about this modality by signing up for our mini course here.
